Imām; Shī'ism и Qur'ān). Возможно, самой замечательной особенностью Qayyūm al-asmā'a является его требование быть «новым Кораном» и «истинным Кораном» (Lawson, Gnostic Apocalypse and Islam, 22). (Bahā'u’llāh, Īqān, trans. Effendi, par. |
Bahāʾīs [Supplement 2016] (3,940 words) Bahāʾīs are the followers of the Bahāʾī religion (known as the "Bahāʾī Faith, " its official name), an independent world religion with Bābī origins within an Islamic matrix and milieu. The Bahāʾī Faith — phenomenologically a doctrinal and social enlargement of the Bābī religion by way of sui generis sacred texts characterised by a more pronounced cosmopolitanism and egalitarianism — was founded by Mīrzā Ḥusayn-ʿAlī Nūrī (1817-92), known as Bahāʾullāh («Glory of God»; the standard Bahāʾī spelling, Bahā’u’llāh, will be employed throughout this article), in Baghdad in 1863. In 1866 it emerged as a distinct faith-community in Edirne (modern Turkey). Bausani states that "Bahāʾī doctrines … present a clear though simple theology and a precise legislative organization that is totally different from that of Islam, " and that Bahāʾism is «an autonomous and specific religion, no longer bound to Islam … truly the fourth monotheistic religion (together with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) … [and] the first monotheistic religion to originate in Persia, if one excludes the partial Zoroastrian monotheism» (Bausani, Religion in Iran, 396). Despite having a modest seven million adherents, the Bahāʾī religion is now established in every country in the world today except North Korea and Vatican City.
Prophecy foretells, as well as tells forth. In Bahāʾī doctrine, the «cycle of prophecy» or «cycle of Adam» (kawr-i ādam) prepared the world for the «cycle of fulfilment» (kawr-i taḥaqquq va ikmāl) or the «Bahāʾī cycle» (kawr-i Bahāʾī), symbolically foreshadowed in the Qurʾān as the «great announcement» (al-nabāʾ al-ʿaẓīm, Q 78:2; Bahā’u’llāh, Kitāb al-aqdas, paragraph 167). This «cycle of fulfilment» was inaugurated by the Bāb («Gate»), who prophesied the imminent advent of «him whom God shall manifest» (man yuẓhiruhu llāh), whom the majority of Bābīs (followers of the Bāb) came to view as Bahā’u’llāh. A Bahāʾī theology of pluralism, with special reference to Islam, may be based on a statement by Shoghi Effendi, designated as the «Guardian» of the Bahāʾī Faith in the years 1921-57: «Unequivocally and without the least reservation it proclaims all established religions to be divine in origin, identical in their aims, complementary in their functions, continuous in their purpose, indispensable in their value to mankind» (Effendi, World order, 58). This, of course, applies as much to Islam as to other religions. As it arose out of an Islamic historical context and milieu the Bahāʾī religion has certain Islamicate elements, yet it exhibits certain other features that, phenomenologically, are supra-Islamicate and socially and institutionally distinctive in character. For instance, Islamic doctrine adheres to a belief in successive revelations, beginning with Adam and culminating with Muḥammad as the «seal of the prophets.» In Bahāʾī teachings, the idea of successive revelations is invested with a teleology that transforms it into progressive revelation, where the succession of messengers throughout the history of religions is not only sequential but also cumulative, coefficient with the social evolution of humanity. As humanity advances socially so does the corresponding need for guidance and laws suited to the exigencies of the day and age. Here, «progressive» conveys the notion of a «fuller» and «more advanced» repository of divine guidance (by way of revelatory sacred texts) while making no claim of intrinsic superiority.
The Bāb’s earliest works display a conscious effort to extend and amplify a Qurʾānic voice, a crucial warrant of revelation. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the Qayyūm al-asmāʾ is its claim to be the «new Qurʾān» and the «true Qurʾān» (Lawson, Gnostic Apocalypse and Islam, 22). To illustrate this audacious claim, several examplars may be cited: «I swear by your Lord, this Book is verily the same Qurʾān (lit. al-furqān) which was sent down in the past.» (QA 81, verse 31, trans. Taherzadeh, Selections from the writings of the Bāb, p. 67). Ioannesyan (Prophetic mission, 14) points to QA 99, where the Bāb speaks of two furqān’s (referring to the Qur’an and Qayyūm al-asmāʾ). Ioannesyan (Prophetic mission, 19) also cites QA 41, where the Bāb states that the Qayyūm al-asmāʾ was sent down as the mystery of the Qurʾān anew, with a new truth, in a new way. Confirming this, Mohammad-Hosseini (The commentary on the sūra of Joseph, 8) explains that in QA 3 the Bāb «mentions three times that the Qurʾān has been revealed to his heart.» Similar claims are made in QA 7 and 26. More generally, Saiedi states that «the Qayyūm al-asmāʾ is also frequently called the ‘Qurʾān’ or the ‘Inner Qurʾān’» (Saiedi,Gate of the heart, 140). In the first chapter of QA, the Bāb makes the eschatological declaration that his religion is henceforth the «true Islam» to which all should turn: «Thus whoso seeketh Islam (i.e. submission to God), let him submit unto this Remembrance. … Whoso rejecteth this true Islam, God shall not accept, on the Day of Resurrection, any of his deeds» (trans. Saiedi, Gate of the heart, 142). In 1850, the Bāb, thirty years old and a prisoner at this time, was transferred from Chihrīq to Tabriz. By order of Grand Vizier Amīr Kabīr — and by death warrant signed by a number of Muslim clerics — the Bāb was executed by firing squad on July 9, 1850, an event his followers, then and now, regard as martyrdom (Amanat, Resurrection, pp. 394—405).
Bahā’u’llāh’s style of discourse is exegetical in nature, with frequent pairings, linked by the Persian metaphorical genitive (iḍāfa-yi majāzī), of Qurʾānic symbols and referents. Hermeneutically, the Īqān resonates with five Islamic orientations towards symbolism: 1. the semanticism of rhetoric, especially the science of tropes (ʿilm al-bayān); 2. the dialectic of theology (kalām); 3. reason (ʿaql) and analogy (qiyās) as a reflex of philosophy (falsafa) and jurisprudence (fiqh); 4. the use of allusion (ishāra) and gnosis (maʿrifa qalbīya) in Ṣūfī/Ishrāqī mysticism (see Ṣūfism and the Qurʾān); and 5. recourse to apocalyptic presentism, adducing prophetic proof-texts to instantiate a realised eschatology, a common characteristic of millenarian sectarianism.
The Islamic idea of prophethood is anchored in Q 33:40, which is widely believed to confirm Muḥammad as the final prophet (see Prophets and prophethood). In what is perhaps his most significant exegetical move, Bahā’u’llāh relativises that claim in order to supersede it, refocusing the reader’s attention a mere four verses later (Q 33:44) on the eschatological attainment of the presence of God (liqāʾ Allāh) on the Last Day (see eschatology): Even as the Lord of being hath in His unerring Book (Qurʾān), after (baʿd az) speaking of the «Seal» in His exalted utterance: «Muḥammad is the Apostle of God and the Seal of the Prophets» (Q 33:40), hath revealed unto all people the promise (vaʾda) of «attainment unto the divine Presence (liqāʾyi khudā).» To this attainment to the presence of the immortal King testify the verses of the Book, some of which We have already mentioned (cf. par. 148: Q 29:23, 2:46, 2:249, 18:111, 13:2). The one true God is My witness! Nothing more exalted or more explicit than «attainment unto the divine Presence» hath been revealed in the Qurʾān (va khudā-yi vāḥid shāhid-i maqāl ast kih hīch amrī aʾẓam az liqāʾ va asraḥ az an dar furqān zikr nayāftih). Well is it with him that hath attained thereunto, in the day wherein most of the people, even as ye witness, have turned away therefrom. And yet, through the mystery of the former (avval) verse, they have turned away from the grace promised by the latter (thānī), despite the fact that «attainment unto the divine Presence» in the «Day of Resurrection» (liqāʾ dar yawm-i qiyām) is explicitly stated in the Book (Qurʾān). (Bahā’u’llāh, Īqān, trans. Effendi, par. 181-2, with parenthetical references added; Bahā’u’llāh, Īqān, par. 181-2). In this pivotal passage, although Bahā’u’llāh refers back to "verses of the Book, some of which We have already mentioned, " a quick search of the Īqān shows that, in par. 148, Bahā’u’llāh cites Q 29:23, 2:46, 2:249, 18:111, and 13:2. Yet in this passage Bahā’u’llāh also alludes to a Qurʾānic announcement of the «attainment unto the divine presence» on the «day of resurrection» (liqāʾ dar yawm-i qiyām) that comes «after» (baʿd az) the «seal» verse. Shoghi Effendi, in his dual role as authorised translator and interpreter of Bahāʾī scriptures, provides a word-for-word, literal translation in rendering the Persian as: «And yet, through the mystery of the former.» He then inserts one word, "verse, " for amplification, which is not in the original Persian. This subtle yet highly significant gloss disambiguates the text, narrowing the reading from an episodic sequence of prophetic/eschatological events («seal of the prophets» followed by «divine presence») to a textual, Qurʾānic sequence, i.e. of a pair of verses descriptive of this same sequence. This makes perfect sense since the preposition «after» (baʿd az) can also mean «next.» In a widely cited reading, Buck (Symbol, pp. 191—200; Beyond, pp. 375-78) proposed that Bahā’u’llāh intended this pair of verses, Q 33:40 and Q 33:44, to be read together. Indeed, the very next verse after the «seal» verse that refers to the eschatological encounter with God is Q 33:44, which reads: «Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be, ‘Peace.’ And He has prepared for them a noble reward» (Sahih International). A Shīʿī rendering is: «On the day when they will be brought into the presence of their Lord, their greeting to each other will be, ‘Peace be with you.’ God has prepared an honorable reward them» (Muḥammad Sarwar). Here, cognates of liqāʾ and yawm are found in Q 33:44. The Arabic word for «they will meet Him» is yalqawnahu (third person masculine plural imperfect verb, related to liqāʾ) and that for «day» is yawma (accusative masculine noun). These terms correspond — conceptually as well as linguistically — to Bahā’u’llāh’s reference to «‘attainment unto the divine Presence’ on the ‘Day of Resurrection’» (liqāʾ dar yawm-i qiyām). This juxtaposition — indeed, pairing — not only of two concepts, but of two pivotal verses — Q 33:40 and Q 33:44 — has a dramatic effect. Among Muslims worldwide the importance of Q 33:40 is universally acknowledged. In the Īqān, Bahā’u’llāh places Q 33:44 on a par with Q 33:40. Indeed, as paramount in prophetic history as the advent of Muḥammad as the «seal of the prophets» surely is, according to Bahā’u’llāh’s interpretation/argument, of even greater significance is the eschatological encounter with God. It now remains to be seen how Bahā’u’llāh interprets Q 33:44 and its parallels (adduced in par. 48 as Q 29:23, 2:46, 2:249, 18:111, 13:2). Arguing that a direct beatific vision of God is impossible, Bahā’u’llāh reasons that Q 33:44 anticipates a future theophany who, as deus revelatus and divine vicegerent, is symbolically God by proxy. Similarly, Bahā’u’llāh, in an earlier work, «Gems of divine mysteries» (Jawāhir al-asrār), explains: Know then that the paradise (hādhihi l-janna, lit. «this garden») that appeareth on the day of God (yawm Allāh) surpasseth every other paradise and excelleth the realities of Heaven (ḥaqāʾiq al-riḍwān). For when (baʿd alladhī, lit. «after») God—blessed and glorified is He—sealed the station of prophethood (maqām al-nubuwwa) in the person of Him who was His friend (ḥabībihi), His chosen one (ṣafiyyihi), and His treasure (khiyaratihi) amongst His creatures, as hath been revealed from the kingdom of glory: «but he is the apostle of God and the seal of the prophets» (Q 33:40), He promised all men that they shall attain unto His own presence on the Day of Resurrection (waʿada al-ʿibād bi-liqāʾihi yawm al-qiyāma). In this He meant to emphasise the greatness of the Revelation to come, as it hath indeed been manifested through the power of truth. (Bahā’u’llāh, "Gems of divine mysteries, " par. 58; Bahā’u’llāh, Jawāhir al-asrār, par. 58). Here, a greater «revelation» is posited. Revelation is a concept familiar to all Muslims. Simply put, Bahā’u’llāh argues at some length in the Īqān that the Qurʾān presages the advent of the Bāb as the «promised one.» Of even greater significance is what Bahā’u’llāh implies because of this. Scholarship concurs that the primary eschatological symbol in the Īqān is the Bāb, while, at the same time, a messianic «secret» pervades it as a subtext, charging the work with heightened eschatological tension and auguring Bahā’u’llāh’s imminent declaration of his mission to the discerning, whether before or after Bahā’u’llāh’s prophetic mission commenced. (Bahā’u’llāh’s «messianic secrecy» is widely accepted in academic Bahāʾī studies.) Through explicative logic, the Īqān — arguably the world’s most widely-read non-Muslim Qurʾānic commentary — served as an advance prophetic warrant for Bahā’u’llāh’s proclaimed mission to unify the world. Bahā’u’llāh’s other Qurʾān commentaries include, inter alia, «Commentary on the mysterious (lit. ‘disconnected’) letters» (Tafsīr-i ḥurūfāt-i muqaṭṭaʿa; see letters and mysterious letters), which incorporates a discourse on the «Light verse» (Q 24:35), and «Commentary on ‘He is’» (Tafsīr-i Hū[wa]). As Eschraghi notes, Bahā’u’llāh «initially engaged in esoteric and allegorical Qurʾānic exegesis» but, from the 1860s onwards, «the prominence of ‘Islamic’ topics clearly diminished in Bahā’u’llāh’s writings as he works towards founding a new religion and introduces distinct doctrines» (Eschraghi, Promised one, 112). Although Islamic topics are largely eclipsed by increasing attention to expositions of Bahāʾī doctrine and praxis (as would generally be expected in the emergence of a new religion), Islamic tropes, themes and expositions are found through Bahāʾī scriptures nonetheless. (See e.g. Necati Alkan, «By the fig and the olive.») Since the works of the Bāb, Bahā’u’llāh, and ʿAbdu’l-Bahā constitute the corpus of Bahāʾī scriptures, the Qurʾān itself, while respected and revered by Bahāʾīs worldwide, does not occupy a central place in Bahāʾī doctrine and praxis. However, as a doctrinal posture appreciative of the Qurʾān and of the contributions of Islam to civilization, Bahāʾīs appreciate, and, will continue to value, their historical and doctrinal Islamic heritage. |

Bahāʾīs (3,648 words), adherents of the new religion which was founded by Bahāʾ Allāh [q.v.], and of which the forerunner, according to Bahāʾī doctrine, was the Bāb [q.v.]. The foremost authority on the Bahāʾī religion, and its disseminator in Europe and America, was ʿAbbās Efendī, the eldest son of the founder, better known among the Bahāʾīs as ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ (Servant of Bahāʾ). Born on 23 May 1844 at Tehran, he accompanied his father on his journeys and in his exile, and at his death was recognised by the great majority of the Bahāʾīs as the authorised exponent and interpreter of his father’s writings Centre of the Covenaut and «Model of Bahāʾī Life», in accordance with Bahāʾ Allāh’s will (Kitāb ʿAhdī); this will, however, was contested by ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ’s brother Muḥammad ʿAlī, who set up a rival group within the Bahāʾī organisation and contrived to compromise his brother with the Ottoman authorities, who were hostile to the Bahāʾīs. He was released from prison in 1908 under the amnesty granted by ¶ the new Ottoman Government of the Young Turks, and in 1910 began his three great missionary journeys. The first was to Egypt (1910), the second to Europe (Paris and London, 1911), and the third to America and Europe (1912-13). From New York he made his way across the entire United States in eight months to Los Angeles and San Francisco, stopping in the main towns and preaching in evangelical churches, synagogues, masonic halls, etc. In September 1912 he returned to Europe, and from England went again to Paris, then to Germany, Austria and Hungary. Finally at the end of 1913 he returned from Paris to Palestine. The first Bahāʾī group in America had formed as early as 1894, and on 10 December 1898 the first American Bahāʾī pilgrims arrived at Acre. ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ’s journey, one of the objects of which had been to counter the propaganda of his brother’s supporters, also notably strengthened the community of American adherents. In addition to this he formed Bahāʾī groups in the European countries he passed through. In 1920 the British Government appointed him Knight of the Order of the British Empire. He died on 28 November at Ḥayfā and was buried beside the Bāb, in the great mausoleum which was completed in 1957. In his will he had appointed Shoghi Efendi (S̲h̲awḳī Efendī) Rabbānī, the oldest of his grandsons (the eldest son of his eldest daughter) as «Guardian of the Cause of God» (Walī-yi Amr Allāh). Shoghi Efendi, who died on 3 Nov., was born at Ḥayfā in the last years of the last century. He studied at Oxford and in 1936 married the American Mary Maxwell, who took the name Rūhiyyè Ḵh̲ānum. From 1923 onwards he lived in Ḥayfā in Israel, the world administrative centre of the faith.
The Bahāʾī religion, while it claims to be «scientific» and opposed to dogma, has more clearly defined theological, philosophical, and social doctrines and forms of worship than some Orientalists have thought. I give them briefly below on the basis of the sources cited in the bibliography. Religions doctrines . 1. God. A completely transcendent and unknowable entity. «Every road to Him is barred». The Bahāʾīs are opposed to mystic pantheism. Mystics have only given form to their own imaginings. «Even the loftiest souls and the purest hearts, however high they may fly in the realms of science and mysticism, can never pass beyond that which has been created inside themselves» (mā Ḵh̲uliḳa fī anfusihim bi-anfusihim) (Lawḥ-i Salmān). 2. Creation. The unknowable essence of God makes itself manifest and creates that which is not God. The Bahāʾī idea of the beginning of things falls between that of creation and that of emanation. We could speak of eternal creation, seeing that the Bahāʾī texts tend to keep the term Ḵh̲alḳ (creation), but at the same time maintain that since the attribute of Ḵh̲āliḳ (creator) is co-eternal with God, there has never been a time when the world did not exist. Thus the world is eternal (Lawḥ-i Ḥikmat). 3. A special form of the manifestation of God is that which features in the Prophets (The Bahāʾī technical term is maẓāhir-i ilāhiyya, divine manifestations, rather than rusul or anbiyā). Thus the concept of ḥulūl (incarnation in the full sense of the word) is not accepted. In this connexion the letter of Bahāʾ Allāh to Nāṣir al-Dīn S̲h̲āh (Lawḥ-i Sulṭān) is particularly interesting, as is the Kitāb al-S̲h̲ayk̲h̲ , in which he describes his own mystic experience in the prison of Siyāh Čāl at Tehran. ¶ The Prophet has two differing conditions: he is a man, but also a very clear mirror in which God is reflected. Thus in a certain sense it is not wrong to call him God, by way of abbreviation. The status of such a being as could be called «prophetic» is radically different from that of man; it falls between man’s status and that of God. According to Bahāʾī doctrine no man, however perfect he may become, will be able to attain prophetic status (or better, that of «manifestation»), just as no animal, perfect as it may be of its kind, can aspire to human status. The manifestation of God through the Prophets never ceases. The manifestations of the Divine are successive. The first prophet is Adam, then come the traditional prophets of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Zoroaster also is considered a true prophet, though the Buddha and Confucius are seen rather as great masters of the spiritual life. After Muḥammad come the Bāb (considered by the Bahāʾīs as a true independent manifestation of God whose specific mission lasted only nine years), and Bahāʾ Allāh. The Bahāʾīs allow that other prophets better adapted to advanced stages of human progress may come after him, but «not before a thousand years» (Aḳdas). The prophetic periods are grouped together in larger cycles; with the Bāb the cycle begun by Adam ends and the Bahāʾī cycle begins. The latter is destined, according to doctrine, to last at least 500,000 years. It is thus inexact to consider the Bahāʾī religion as syncretistic. Although it accepts all the prophetie religions as essentially true, it claims that it is the one best adapted to the present time, and that it includes in itself all its predecessors.
The moral and social tenets of the Bahāʾīs are classified by ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ under the following twelve headings: 1. Unity of the human race. 2. Need for an independent search for Truth. 3. Essential unity of all religions. 4. Need for religion to promote unity. 5. Need for science and religion to be in harmony. 6. Equal rights and duties for the two sexes. 7. Opposition to all kinds of prejudice: national, religious, political, economic, etc. 8. Attainment of world peace. 9. Obligation to provide universal education, accessible to all. 10. Solution on a religious basis of the social problem, with the abolition of the extremes of excessive wealth and degrading poverty. 11. Use of an auxiliary international language. 12. Constitution of an International Tribunal. The forms of administration and organisation which we now describe in brief conduce according to the Bahāʾīs to the realisation of these aims: The Bahāʾī religion has no public ritual, nor any sacraments or private rites of a sacred character. The only religious duties of the Bahāʾīs are: 1. To assemble every 19 days on the first day of each Bābī month (the Bāb’s calendar was adhered to by Bahāʾ Allāh) for a communal celebration, called by the Western Bahāʾīs the «19th day’s Feast», and by the Persians ḍiyāfat-i rūz-i nūzdahum . It consists of readings of prayers and sacred texts (and even of passages from the Bible, the Ḳurʾān, and other sacred texts if desired), followed by deliberations more properly administrative in character, when the community’s financial affairs are reviewed, important announcements are made, etc. A small meal is then taken together, «even if nothing more than a glass of water», in accordance with the Bāb’s decree. 2. To fast 19 days, i.e., the entire Bābī month of ʿAlāʾ, from 2 to 21 March, the Bahāʾī New Year’s Day. The fast is of Islamic type, requiring abstention from all food and drink, etc., from dawn till sunset. 3. To practise complete abstention from all alcoholic drink. 4. To pray three times a day, morning noon, and evening, according to short, set formulae. The obligatory prayers (written in Arabic by Bahāʾ Allāh) may be recited in any language. Some are preceded by ablutions, which are much simpler than Islamic ablutions, consisting only of washing the face and hands and reciting two very short prayers. Apart from this the Aḳdas lays down precise rules for the division of inheritances (a portion of which falls to the teachers), levies a tax of 19 per cent on revenues, and prescribes numerous other rules and penal, civil and religious laws, which are followed in part only by the eastern Bahāʾīs. Marriage is monogamous: although the Aḳdas allows bigamy, the provision was cancelled by ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ («Model of Bahāʾī Life.», on the basis of an explicit declaration by Bahāʾ Allāh). For a marriage to be valid the consent of the couple’s parents is required. Divorce is allowed, but discouraged. The controlling bodies of the Bahāʾī community are of two kinds, administrative and instructional, the first being made up of elected councils and the second of persons and associations appointed from above. The two types come together at the summit ¶ of organisation in the person of the Guardian (Walī-yi Amr Allāh). The administrative bodies are as follows: 1. The local spiritual assembly (Bayt al-ʿAdl-i Maḥallī). These are formed wherever there are at least nine Bahāʾīs. They are of nine members elected by universal suffrage. Election is considered as an act of worship, and the Bahāʾī concept, unlike that underlying the electoral system of the parliamentary democracies, does not imply responsibility of the elected towards their electors, since the latter are merely instruments of the will of God. Elections are held each year during the period from 21 April to 2 May (Riḍwān festival). At the present time there are local assemblies in more than 200 countries throughout the world. 2. Where there is a sufficient number of local assemblies a «Convention» of 19 members elected by universal suffrage elects a national spiritual assembly (Bayt al-ʿAdl-i Millī or Markazī) also of nine members, not necessarily from among its own members but from all adherents of the faith. There are at the present time more than twenty of these. 3. When sufficient national assemblies have been formed their members will elect a universal spiritual assembly (not necessarily from among themselves but from all adherents). This assembly will be called Bayt al-ʿAdl-i ʿUmūmī , Universal House of Justice. Its president will be the Guardian, by virtue of his office, and for the term of his life. The task of the Universal House of Justice will be to function as supreme administrative body and court, and in addition to frame in accordance with the needs of the time laws not laid down by the Aḳdas or the other writings of the Founder; these laws it will have the power to abrogate should need arise. The jurisdiction of the different Assemblies is absolute within their sphere of competence and fully binding on all believing Bahāʾīs, who should in theory bring before their Assembly even their private affairs and differences (in the first instance the local Assembly would be concerned, subsequently the national if the question proved insoluble). Alongside these elected administrative systems, which are graded from the bottom up, is the instructional system, graded from the top down and made up of appointed members. At its head is the Guardian, whose powers, however, are interpretative only and not legislative. He has legislative powers only as a lawful member of the Universal House of Justice, on the same basis as the other members. The Guardian’s position is hereditary, but his eldest son is not necessarily appointed his successor. He names his successor in his life-time from among the members of his family. Immediately below the Guardian in the instructional order come the «Hands of the Cause of God» (Ayādī-yi Amr Allāh), of whom he appoints a varying number. The «Hands of the Cause» elect among themselves a Council of nine members whose duty is to assist the Guardian and confirm his choice of successor. The Hands of the Cause appoint their own subsidiaries in their turn, who assist them in their work of instruction and dissemination of the doctrine and spirit of the Faith («Auxiliary Boards»). The Bahāʾīs consider such a complex administrative system as of divine origin. This system is in fact outlined in the Aḳdas, with additions and improvements by ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ, and by the present Guardian, Shoghi Efendi, in the matter of appointing assistants for the Hands of the Cause. For the Bahāʾīs such a system is not merely a means of internal administration of the Community’s affairs, but the ¶ prototype of the ideal world government of the future, which will eventually arise after a long process of peaceful evolution. The Bahāʾīs do not accept the separation of Church and State, but maintain that in the absence of priests and sacraments the Bahāʾī fusion of religion and administration will take on a different character from that of the traditional theocracies. Every Bahāʾī is thus formally forbidden to belong to a political party or to secret societies and obedience to due authority is obligatory. The Bahāʾī religion having a strong pacifist trend, members of the Bahāʾī community are advised to avoid military service, at least in lands where conscientious objection is recognised by law. We could also speak of a strong trend towards vegetarianism, based on a short speech made by ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ, during his stay in America, in which he states that he favours the creation of a way of life in which it would no longer be necessary to kill other living beings for food; but he would not force others to accept his view. Likewise he speaks critically of hunting. He advises strongly against smoking, without formally forbidding it.
It is very difficult to give figures for the numbers of professing Bahāʾīs in their communities in the different countries of the world. The central core is in Persia, where different estimates of their number vary from more than a million down to about five hundred thousand. In the city of Tehran there are about thirty thousand. The United States of America come next (about ten thousand), and in Europe, Germany (one thousand); Bahāʾīs in other countries can be counted in hundreds. In Iran even now (1958 they are not a recognised religious minority and often suffer persecutions of varying severity. Among other things they are forbidden to print books and newspapers. All official Bahāʾī publications in Persia ¶ are cyclostyled. Recently (1955-58) great progress has been made in Africa (especially Uganda) where the number of Bahāʾīs exceeds three thousand. |
