Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān

Inquisition — Act or process of questioning; judicial or official questioning before a jury, often with the connotation of pursuit of heresy (q.v.) and the punishment of heretics. Two Arabic roots appear in the Qurʾān with the sense of "inquisition: " the fifth verbal form of f-q-d and the eighth form of m-ḥ-n. Tafaqqada is attested once, at q 27:20, where Solomon (q.v.) searches among the birds¶ for the hoopoe, who finally brings him news of the Queen of Sheba. The eighth verbal form of the root m-ḥ-n (whence also miḥna, discussed below) is attested twice (q 49:3; 60:10) and lends itself to the title of a sūra, q 60 (Sūrat al-Mumtaḥana, «She who is to be examined»). In both of the qurʾānic attestations, reference is made to the testing of conscience regarding faith (q.v.): in the first instance, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Prophet are the ones whose hearts God has proven to righteousness (amtaḥana llāhu qulūbahum lil-taqwā). The second verse, from which the name of q 60 is derived, instructs the believers to examine women who come to them seeking refuge. If they are found to be true believers, they are not to be returned to the unbelievers (kuffār) who, the verse continues, are not lawful (ḥill) for them. It is not, however, a sin (junāḥ) for the believers to marry such women. This policy marked a modification of the truce of Ḥudaybiya, according to which the Muslims were to return all fugitives, male and female, but the polytheists were not required to give up renegades from Islam. q 60:12 contains the terms of the oath of allegiance that such women were to swear to Muḥammad: they were to ascribe no partner to God, would not steal, commit adultery, kill their children, lie (q.v.), nor disobey Muḥammad (cf. Ibn Isḥāq-Guillaume, 509-10).
¶ This qurʾānic connotation — of examining, and judging, the faith of the members of the Muslim community — was incorporated in the usage of the noun miḥna to denote the events which followed after the seventh ʿAbbāsid caliph al-Maʾmūn (r. 193—218/809-33) demanded in 218/833 that leading scholars (ʿulamāʾ) publicly proclaim their acquiescence in the doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾān (q.v.). The ʿulamāʾ were threatened with confiscation, torture and even execution if they did not accede to the caliphal order. Though the miḥna, which lasted some nineteen years (218-37/833-52), was primarily conducted in the capital Baghdad, it was also enforced by caliphal representatives in a number of provinces of the Islamic empire. After al-Maʾmūn’s death, the miḥna was continued, albeit with different degrees of rigor, by his successors al-Muʿtaṣim (r. 218-27/833-42) and especially al-Wāthiq (r. 227-32/842-7). The miḥna was halted by the tenth ʿAbbāsid caliph al-Mutawakkil (r. 232-47/847-61), whereupon — and till this very day — the uncreatedness or eternity of the Qurʾān came to be the majority doctrine. It should be pointed out that the miḥna was an exceptional episode in Islamic history and hardly resembled the duration and scale of the Christian inquisition of the Middle Ages. Three views have been proposed to explain al-Maʾmūn’s introduction of the miḥna. D. Sourdel(La politique) suggests that through the miḥna al-Maʾmūn sought to enforce the doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾān as a means of uniting the two branches of Sunnī and Shīʿī Islam. A critique of this explanation rests on the current view that at the time of al-Maʾmūn both «branches» were doctrinally still evolving and, moreover, neither had an unambiguous position on the nature of the ¶ Qurʾān. A second explanation, popular among writers of overviews of Islamic history, erroneously implies a (causal) link between the miḥna and the rationalist school of the Muʿtazila which happened to espouse the doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾān. There were, however, other rationally-oriented movements which professed the very same view and, as J. van Ess (Ḍirār b. ʿAmr) has pointed out, al-Maʾmūn held some views which clashed with Muʿtazilī thinking. Making use of the fact that, uncharacteristically, al-Maʾmūn was quite dogmatic in demanding assent to the doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾān by enjoining a peremptory and unequivocal yes/no answer of the men subjected to the miḥna, proponents of the third explanation are of the opinion that behind all this was al-Maʾmūn’s resolve to have the ʿulamāʾ publicly acknowledge that it was not they, but the incumbent of the caliphal institution who had supreme authority on religious doctrine — of which the createdness of the Qurʾān was an example. |

Ḥarb [q.vv.]. Ḥanbal [q.v.] и Muḥammad b. , Wakī ', i, 268 f, также Ifrīḳiya, см. 834 и Ramaḍān 220 / Sept. Aḥmad, 278; Ḥanbal b. Isḥāḳ, 42). Ḥammād и al-Shāfi'ī's дисциплина Yūsuf b. 'Abd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Ibn Abi 'l-Wafā', i, 290, № 764 («al-Khalīdjī») и ii, 304, № 397 ( «аль-Khalandjī»)). |
Miḥna (a.), a term meaning in general usage a «testing» or «trial», whether by the accidents of fortune or the actions of men (Patton, 1). This general sense is reflected in the Kitāb al-Miḥan by Abu ’l-ʿArab [q.v.] where the author sets out to give an account of "those who have been afflicted (ubtuliya) by being killed, imprisoned, flogged, or threatened. . . " (47). More particularly, the term (together with its counterpart imtiḥān) signifies the procedure adopted by the caliph al-Maʾmūn [q.v.], and officially applied under his two immediate successors, for the purpose of imposing the view that the Ḳurʾān had been created.
1. The course of historical events. The circumstances of this initiative, which was set in motion by al-Maʾmūn in a letter written in Rabīʿ I 218/April 833, four months before his death, are most fully described by al-Ṭabarī (iii, 1112 ff.) and have been examined in detail by Patton (56 ff.). In the first instance, al-Maʾmūn, who was at al-Raḳḳa (or Damascus, according to al-Yaʿḳūbi, ii, 571), desired his deputy in Bag̲h̲dād, Isḥāḳ b. Ibrāhīm, to test the ḳāḍī s in his jurisdiction concerning God’s creation of the Ḳurʾān. The language of his letter to this effect is powerful and direct: God has the right to have His religion carried out properly, and the great mass of the common people, who know no better, being without the light of knowledge, are mistaken when they espouse the view that the Ḳurʾān is eternal (ḳadīm awwal); for God has said in the Ḳurʾān «We have made it (d̲j̲aʿalnāhu) an Arabic Ḳurʾān» (XKIII, 3), and everything He has made (d̲j̲aʿala) He has created (k̲h̲alaḳa). In addition, they have made a fallacious link between themselves and the sunna, making themselves out to be «the people of truth, religion and unity» and characterising those who do not agree with them as «people of falsehood, unbelief and schism», but in reality they are, inter alia, «the worst of the umma» and «the tongue of the Devil» and are in no way to be trusted. The Commander of the Faithful will not rely on anyone who does not conform in this regard, nor are ḳāḍīs to accept the testimony of such people. This letter to Isḥāḳ was followed by another instructing him to send to al-Maʾmūn seven named ¶ individuals, including the traditionists Ibn Saʿd, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and Zuhayr b. Ḥarb [q.vv.]. All seven were tested and, having acknowledged the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān, were returned to Bag̲h̲dād where their acknowledgement was publicised. By this time, too, miḥna letters from al-Maʾmūn were reaching other centres: the text of the letter which reached Miṣr in D̲j̲umādā II 218/July 833 was closely modelled on, or identical with, the first letter to Isḥāḳ (Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī, ed. Cairo, ii, 218 f. ; cf. al-Kindī, 193, 445 ff.). But it was at Bag̲h̲dād that the impact of the miḥna was felt most at this time: in response to further instructions from al-Maʾmūn, Isḥāḳ went on to test about thirty leading fuḳahāʾ and ḥadīt̲h̲ specialists, who, with only two exceptions, and in certain cases under some duress, acknowledged the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān. The exceptions, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal [q.v.] and Muḥammad b. Nūḥ al-ʿId̲j̲lī, were despatched in irons to be dealt with by al-Maʾmūn at Tarsus on his return from Byzantine territory, but the sudden death of the caliph (mid-Rad̲j̲ab 218/mid-August 833) saved them from this particular predicament and they were sent back. Muḥammad b. Nūh died on the return journey, and Aḥmad was kept in detention after reaching Bag̲h̲dād.
The sources give the impression that al-Muʿtaṣim himself was in general predisposed to settle for miḥna as no more than a courtroom formality, and al-Kindī even remarks that «the matter of the miḥna was easy (sahlan) during the reign of al-Muʿtaṣim» (451), but there are nonetheless two instances early in his reign where it was applied outside the courtroom. The first of these does not seem to have been particularly important: al-Muʿtaṣim wrote to his governor of ¶ Miṣr, Muẓaffar b. Kaydur (held office Rabīʿ II-S̲h̲aʿbān 219/May-Sept. 834), instructing him to test the ʿulamāʾ on the creation of the Ḳurʾān and he tested a group of them (Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī. ii, 230; al-Kindī makes no mention of this, and it is possible that Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī is misrepresenting the al-Maʾmūn letter transmitted by the future caliph al-Muʿtaṣim to Muẓaffar’s father Kaydur, when the latter was governor of Egypt and al-Maʾmūn was still caliph, al-Kindī, 193, 445 ff). The second instance, the matter of the unfinished business of what should be done with Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, was far more significant: indeed, the story of the miḥna of the Imām Aḥmad at the hands of al-Muʿtaṣim looms large in later Sunnī hagiography. Abū Nuʿaym, Ibn al-D̲j̲awzī, al-Subkī and others, drawing freely on material transmitted by members of Aḥmad’s family, regale us with the details of how the courageous and intransigent Imām resisted all attempts to make him acknowledge the created Ḳurʾān, was ultimately flogged on al-Muʿtaṣim’s orders until he was unconscious (but cf. the alternative version given by Abū Nuʿaym, ix, 205 f.), and was released shortly afterwards when commotion among the population of Bag̲h̲dād threatened to get out of hand. These accounts include some striking embellishments, e.g. how Aḥmad’s sarāwīl were supernaturally restored to their proper place (by a golden hand in some versions) when they were in the process of slipping off while he was being flogged. In sum, what is portrayed is an archetypal Sunnī hero, quietist by disposition but resolute when pressed to espouse a view he regards as religiously improper; there is no room for taḳiyya here (for a detailed treatment of all this, see Patton, 93 ff). That Aḥmad was flogged is not in doubt, for all that the incident is ignored by al-Ṭabarī and Ibn Miskawayh; the sources give as the date of this event both Ramaḍān 219/Sept. 834 and Ramaḍān 220/Sept. 835, the second of which is to be preferred if it is correct that the total period of his detention was about two-and-a-half years (see e.g., Ṣāliḥ b. Aḥmad, 278; Ḥanbal b. Isḥāḳ, 42). There are, however, certain respects in which the received Sunnī account may in fact be questioned, in view of what some of the sources have to say. In the first place, these sources are under the impression that Aḥmad was flogged until he actually acknowledged the created Ḳurʾān: al-Yaʿḳūbī knew this to be the case (ii, 577), and Aḥmad’s contemporary al-D̲j̲āḥiẓ tells us that it took only 30 strokes (Rasā’il, ed. Sandūbī, 152); al-Masʿūdī thought that it took 38 strokes (Murūd̲j̲ , § 2797), while Ibn al-Murtaḍā opts for 68 (Ṭabaḳāt al-Muʿtazila , 125). Secondly, these sources know nothing about Aḥmad’s release having been occasioned by a public commotion; for them, his release was the consequence of his acknowledgement, although Ibn al-Murtaḍā would have us believe that it took place only after he had acknowledged the created Ḳurʾān before the assembled population of Bag̲h̲dād. Thirdly, what these sources have to say provides an alternative explanation of why Aḥmad was subsequently left alone by the authorities; it was not because they lacked the nerve to test him again, but because he had capitulated. None of these sources can be regarded as other than more or less hostile to Aḥmad, but even so it is difficult to explain away the essence of what they have to say. The en passant remark by al-D̲j̲āḥiẓ, in particular, with its casual and matter-of-fact tone, has a convincing ring to it; Ibn al-Murtaḍā’s reference to Aḥmad’s public acknowledgement of defeat may well be dismissed as an embellishment, although it would have made good sense from the point of view of Ibn Abī Duʾād, ¶ who was by this time ḳāḍī al-ḳuḍāt and thus in effect chief inquisitor; and even Ibn al-D̲j̲awzī was aware of such accounts, for all that he eschewed them (337: ḥikāyāt fī ḳiṣṣat ḍarbihi lam yat̲h̲but ʿindanā siḥḥatuhā fa-tanakkabnāhā).
According to al-Kindī’s account, al-Wāt̲h̲iḳ wrote immediately after his accession to Ibn Abi ’l-Layt̲h̲ in Miṣr instructing him to prosecute the miḥna with vigour, and the energetic ḳāḍī "left no faḳīh, muḥaddit̲h̲ , muʾad̲h̲d̲h̲in or muʿallim untested. Many people fled and the prisons were full of those who had denied the miḥna "; he ordered that the words «There is no god but God, the Lord of the created Ḳurʾān» be inscribed on the mosques of Fusṭāṭ; and he denied Mālikī and S̲h̲āfiʿī fuḳahāʾ access, or even proximity, to the [main] mosque (al-Kindī, 451; cf. Abu ’lʿArab, 253). In recognition of his efforts, the poet al-D̲j̲amal al-Akbar praised him for having «protected» the ḳawl of Abū Ḥanīfa and having «smashed» the ḳawl of the S̲h̲āfiʿīs and Mālikīs (al-Kindī, 452); and it was this same ḳāḍī who is reported to have tested the ¶ Mālikī Muḥammad (or ʿAbd al-Ḥakam) b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Ḥakam and to have had him flogged in the masd̲j̲id of Miṣr clad only in his underwear (Abu ’l-ʿArab, 437, cf. 253). Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī, on the other hand, says it was in 231/845-6 that the caliph wrote to the provinces (aʿmāl) instructing that the ʿulamāʾ be tested with regard to the created Ḳurʾān (ii, 259), and this apparently included the people of the marches (ahl al-t̲h̲ug̲h̲ūr) (al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1352); in the same year, he declined to ransom those Muslims held by the Byzantines who would acknowledge that the Ḳurʾān had been created (al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1353 f; al-Yaʿḳūbī, ii, 589; Patton, 120). In this same year, too, Aḥmad b. Naṣr al-K̲h̲uzāʿī became involved in a planned uprising in Bag̲h̲dād that misfired. This Aḥmad, the scion of a distinguished partisan of the ʿAbbāsids in the day of the coup that brought them to power, opposed the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān and was much frequented by the Bag̲h̲dādī aṣḥāb al-ḥadīt̲h̲ . On being brought before al-Wāt̲h̲iḳ, he was questioned not about the uprising but about the Ḳurʾān, and his responses drove the enraged caliph to make a personal start on decapitating him; his head was thenceforward placed on public view in Bag̲h̲dād as a grisly warning to potential nonconformists, while his cadaver stayed in Sāmarrāʾ, also on display (al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1342-9; al-Yaʿḳūbī, ii, 589; Patton, 116-18). Coincidentally, it was also in the year 231/846 that Abū D̲j̲aʿfar Aḥmad b. al-Ag̲h̲lab seized power in Ifrīḳiya from his brother Muḥammad (briefly, as it turned out), proclaimed the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān, instituted a miḥna, and had the distinguished Mālikī jurist Saḥnūn [q.v.] arraigned at al-Ḳayrawān before the Muʿtazilī ḳāḍī Ibn Abi ’l-D̲j̲awād; Saḥnūn held to the view that the Ḳurʾān was «the speech of God and not created» and was sentenced to house arrest (Talbi, L’émirat aghlabide , 228; Abu ’l-ʿArab, 454 ff., can be added to Talbi’s references). Al-Wāt̲h̲iḳ is said to have left off the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān after a s̲h̲ayk̲h̲ from Adana, who was one of ahl al-fiḳh wa ’l-ḥadīt̲h̲ , bested Ibn Abī Duʾād in argument on the subject (Patton, 121 ff. ; al-Masʿūdī, Murād̲j̲ , §§ 3132-8, Taʾrīk̲h̲ Bag̲h̲dād, iv, 151 f., and Ibn al-D̲j̲awzī, 350 ff. can be added to Patton’s references). But it was his brother al-Mutawakkil, who succeeded him in D̲h̲u ’l-Ḥid̲j̲d̲j̲a 232/August 847, who put an end to the miḥna. Al-Subkī tells us (ii, 54) that this happened in 234/848-9, and Patton (122) concurs. Certainly, it appears to have been in D̲j̲umādā I—II 234/Jan.-Feb. 849 that al-Mutawakkil prohibited argument about the Ḳurʾān and sent instructions to this effect throughout his domains (al-Kindī, 197; al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1412 (lammā afḍal ilayhi ’l-k̲h̲ilāfa); Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī, ii, 275); and this decision may well have been facilitated by the fact that Ibn Abī Duʾād had become paralysed in the preceding year (al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1379). But there are grounds for holding the view that it was not until 237/851-2 that the miḥna episode was completely phased out. In the first place, it was in that year that the mortal remains of Aḥmad b. Naṣr were taken down and given over to his relatives and that those who had been imprisoned on account of the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān were released (al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1412 f. ; Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī, ii, 290; cf. al-Yaʿḳūbī, ii, 592, which implies that the prisoners were released earlier); it was in that year too that Aḥmad b. Abī Duʾād and his sons were deprived of all influence, together with their estates and most of their wealth, and were sent by al-Mutawakkil away from Sāmarrāʾ to Bag̲h̲dād (al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1410 f.). Secondly, it is instructive to take note of the dates ¶ when ḳāḍī s who had implemented the miḥna were replaced: Ibn Abi ’l-Layt̲h̲ was dismissed as ḳāḍī of Miṣr in S̲h̲aʿbān 235/Feb.-March 850 at the order of al-Mutawakkil, who instructed that he be cursed from the minbar (al-Kindī, 463), and his replacement was appointed in D̲j̲umādā I 237/Nov. 851 (al-Kindī, 467); the ḳāḍī of Mecca, throughout the miḥna period, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. Muḥammad b. Ḥanẓala al-Mak̲h̲zūmī (who was «doctrinally corrupt (k̲h̲abīt̲h̲ al-raʾy) and used to test the people and frighten them»), was dismissed at an unspecified date and his replacement was appointed in 238/852-3 (Wakīʿ, i, 268 f.); the ḳāḍī of Kūfa for practically the whole of the miḥna period, G̲h̲assān b. Muḥammad al-Marwazī (who «used to test the people . . . and was one of the aṣḥāb of Ibn Abī Duʾād»), was dismissed by al-Mutawakkil in 235/849-50 and his replacement was appointed in the same year (Wakīʿ, iii, 194); and one of the Bag̲h̲dād ḳāḍīs, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. G̲h̲ālib (who was one of the aṣḥāb of Ibn Abī Duʾād), was dismissed by al-Mutawakkil in 234/848-9 (Wakīʿ, iii, 277; Ibn Abi ’l-Wafāʾ, i, 237), while another, ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī Yazīd al-K̲h̲aland̲j̲ī («one of the aṣḥāb of Ibn Abī Duʾād who used to test the people»), was dismissed at an unspecified date (probably 237) and his replacement was appointed in 237/851-2 (Wakīʿ iii, 291 f., which reads «al-K̲h̲alīd̲j̲ī»; al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1411. Cf. Ibn Abi ’l-Wafāʾ, i, 290, no. 764 («al-K̲h̲alīd̲j̲ī») and ii, 304, no. 397 («al-K̲h̲aland̲j̲ī»)). In short, al-Mutawakkil apparently thought it prudent to proceed cautiously in bringing the miḥna period to an end; the beginning of the end was the edict of 234; the end of the end was the deportation of Ibn Abī Duʾād and his sons in 237. 2. Theological aspects. Why should al-Maʾmūn have wished to institute a miḥna at all and why should the issue have been the createdness of the Ḳurʾān? In attempting to answer these questions, we should first note that the prevailing view among early traditionists was an insistence that the Ḳurʾān was truly the speech of God and a denial that it had been created, «without turning this denial into a positive doctrine affirming its eternity of pre-existence» (Madelung, Controversy , 513). In other words, in opposing the view that the Ḳurʾān had been created, such people were not saying that it was uncreated but simply that it was God’s personal speech, a view that was usually accompanied by a more general anthropomorphism and ran counter to the notion of stripping God of His attributes (taʿṭīl); as God’s personal speech, the Ḳurʾān was perceived as an expression of the essence of God and was «associated with God much more closely than any part of his creation» (Madelung, 511). It is also clear, however, that, during at least part of his career, Abū Ḥanīfa had taught that the Ḳurʾān had been created (Madelung, 509 f.), and that this contributed to serious differences of opinion within the ranks of his followers (see, e.g., Watt, Formative period, 197—285), notably as between, on the one hand, those who were tradition-minded and adhered to the notions of the Ḳurʾān as the speech of God, «neither creator nor created» (Madelung, 508), and, on the other hand, those who were robustly critical of ḥadīt̲h̲ and held the view that the Ḳurʾān had been created. Thus in the course of the miḥna, we find followers of Abū Ḥanīfa among both the «testers» and the «tested» (Watt, 286). Al-Maʾmūn himself, we are told, «excelled in fiḳh according to the mad̲h̲hab of Abū Ḥanīfa» (Ibn Tag̲h̲rībirdī, ii, 225). At the same time, his views on the Ḳurʾān, as spelled out in his miḥna letters/edicts, are quite unambiguous: he accused the objects of his ¶ odium of putting God and the Ḳurʾān on an equal level, of claiming that it is eternal and primordial, and that God has not created, originated or produced it; they are like the Christians, who claim that Jesus was not created because he is the Word of God (Madelung, 517, citing al-Ṭabarī, iii, 1113, 1118). What was he trying to achieve? According to Sourdel, «jamais auparavant on n’avait vu un calife se présenter comme un ‘docteur’, chargé par Dieu d’éclairer la communauté et de lui communiquer la science qui lui avait été confiée» (Politique religieuse, 44); Lapidus, on the other hand, sees the miḥna as part of a general effort to restore (sic) the ideological authority of the caliphate (Separation , 379); and this idea is taken further by Crone and Hinds (God’s Caliph, ch. v,) who propose that the type of caliphal religious authority which al-Maʾmūn sought to reestablish was one which had indeed been familiar in the time of the Umayyad caliphate. Whether he would have succeeded if he had lived longer is one of the great questions of counterfactual history, although the odds were certainly against him: for he had to contend not only with the choice of his ʿAbbāsid predecessors to play up their roles as kinsmen of the Prophet (at the expense of their role as deputies of God) but also with the fact that by his time the transformation of sunna into Prophetic Sunna documented by ḥadīt̲h̲ had gone a long way. According to Watt, the point of insisting on a created Ḳurʾān as the central feature of the miḥna was that it had less prestige than an uncreated Ḳurʾān (since God might have created it otherwise), and «there could not be the same objections to its provisions being overruled by the decree of an inspired imam. Thus the doctrine of createdness enhanced the power of the caliph and the secretaries, that of uncreatedness the power of the ulama» (Formative period, 179). But this misses the point: for one thing, the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān is a doctrine about God, and more specifically about God’s unity, rather than a doctrine about the Ḳurʾān, and there is in any case no evidence whatsoever to support the view that al-Maʾmūn wanted to overrule the Ḳurʾān; for another, it is clear that it was the populist ḥadīt̲h̲ enthusiasts who were al-Maʾmūn’s target. What al-Maʾmūn in fact appears to have been doing is espousing that form of what may be called «hardline» Ḥanafī thinking which was cautious about ḥadīt̲h̲ and held to the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān, and which to that extent had an affinity with the early Muʿtazilī insistence that the Ḳurʾān be «the only basis for their system of religious doctrine . . . [an insistence which] led them to the rejection of most traditions and, by implication, of legal doctrines based on traditions» (Schacht, Origins , 258). This is not to say that the inspiration for the miḥna necessarily came from Muʿtazilīs or that its initial purpose was the imposition of Muʿtazilī doctrine; indeed, van Ess (Ḍirār , 34) has drawn attention to Ibn Ṭayfūr’s important indications (i) that the truly influential figure behind al-Maʾmūn was the D̲j̲ahmite Ḥanafī Bis̲h̲r al-Marīsī [q.v.], who, while he shared with the Muʿtazila a belief in the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān, did not hold with their doctrine of free will; and (ii) that al-Maʾmūn himself also left off al-ḳawl bi ’l-ḳadar . But this would appear to have been the only point of major difference between the two stances. Otherwise, there are simply further similarities. For example, Abu ’lʿArab (451) knew of a miḥna letter from al-Maʾmūn to Isḥāḳ which stipulated not only the doctrine of the created Ḳurʾān but also the denial of ʿad̲h̲āb al-ḳabr [q.v.] and other aspects of popular eschatology: this ¶ was very much in line with Muʿtazilī thinking. In addition, there is the striking association of many Muʿtazilīs of the period with Ḥanafī fiḳh (e.g. Watt, 286); and since the Muʿtazilīs never elaborated a system of legal doctrine of their own, it can be concluded that such people found «hardline» Ḥanafī fiḳh perfectly congenial. In short, in the context of the miḥna , Muʿtazilī interests overlapped considerably with those of al-Maʾmūn, for all that they were not identical; and this is reflected in al-Maʾmūn’s testamentary stipulation that al-Muʿtaṣim should make Ibn Abī Duʾād his closest confidant. Al-Maʾmūn’s own commitment to vigorous prosecution of the miḥna comes across strongly in his letters/edicts on the subject. In the case of his successors al-Muʿtaṣim and al-Wāt̲h̲iḳ, however, no evidence attests to the same degree of commitment, and it would seem to be fair to conclude that they simply did not share al-Maʾmūn’s vision in this regard. They were in addition functioning in the new military environment of Sāmarrāʾ and were thus more remote than al-Maʾmūn had been from the civilian Muslim population; al-Muʿtaṣim in particular was preoccupied with other important matters; and al-Wāt̲h̲iḳ, for all his early enthusiasm, may in the end have convinced himself that the miḥna, on any level beyond that of a courtroom formality, was simply not going to work. The tradition-minded fuḳahāʾ and the muḥaddit̲h̲ūn and their constituencies among the ʿāmma were manifesting seemingly inexhaustible dumb insolence in defence of their personal God and the lowbrow accretions that went with Him. With the advent of the apoplexy of Ibn Abī Duʾād, al-Mutawakkil can only have felt that he had more to gain than to lose by putting an end to the whole unfortunate affair. The principal consequences of the failure of the miḥna are clear enough: it brought to a decisive end any notion of a caliphal role in the definition of Islam and it permitted the unchecked development of what in due course would become recognisable as Sunnism. The Muʿtazila and what they stood for were discredited, while populist sentiments and what passed as Prophetic ḥadīt̲h̲ were the order of the day. It was now unquestionably the ʿulamāʾ , rather than the caliphs, who were «the legatees of the prophets» (warat̲h̲at al-anbiyāʾ); and henceforward it would be they who, armed with this spiritual authority, and at a distance from those who held temporal power, elaborated classical Islam. |
