ISRAFIL, the name of an archangel, which is probably to be traced to the Hebrew Serdfim as is indicated by the variants Sarafil and Sardafin (Tadj al-'Arus, vii, 375). The change of liquids is not unusu in such endings. His size is astounding; while his feet are under the seventh earth, his head reaches up to the pillars of the divine throne. He has four wings: one in the west, one in the east, one with which he covers his body and one as a protection against the majesty of God. He is covered with hair, mouths and tongues. He is considered to be the angel who reads out the divine decisions from the well-kept Tablet and transmits them to the Archangel to whose department they belong. Three times by day and three times by night he looks down into Hell and is convulsed with grief and weeps so violently that the earth might be inundated by his tears.
For three years he was the companion of the Prophet, whom he initiated into the work of a prophet. Gabriel then took over his task and began the communication of the Kur'an. Alexander is said to have met him before his arrival in the laud of darkness; there he stood upon a hill and blew the trumpet, tears in his eyes. If he is called Lord of the Trumpet, it is mainly because he continually holds the trumpet to his mouth in order to be able to blow at once as soon as God gives the order for the blast which is to arouse men from their graves. It is however also said that Israfll will be first aroused on the day of the Resurrection. He will then take his stand upon the holy rock in Jerusalem and give the signal which will bring the dead back to life. In Egypt, in Lane's time, it was said that his music would refresh the inhabitants of Paradise. |

The Encyclopedia of angels
Angel prominent in Islamic lore, though not named in the Koran. Israfil means “the burning one.” Israfil serves as the angel of resurrection who blows the trumpet on Judgment Day—to bring of his own demise, for he and other angels supposedly will be destroyed in the universal conflagration that will be unleashed. According to lore, Israfil served as a companion to the prophet Muhammad for three years before being succeeded by Gabriel.
A well-known Islamic story says that Allah dispatched Michael, Gabriel, Israfil and Azrael to the four corners of the earth, to get seven handfuls of dust for the creation of Adam. However only Azrael, the Angel of death, was able to accomplish this.
