Corruption — Decay, depravity, impurity. The topic of corruption has two general references in the Qurʾān: (1) committing mischievous and depraved deeds that willfully subvert God’s order and purposes (see disobedience); (2) perverting scripture (see scripture and the qurʾān) so as to mislead and conceal its meanings. The first reference is most often expressed by the Arabic root f-s-d, occurring principally in late Meccan and Medinan passages, e.g. q 2:251: «If God did not check one group of people by means of another, the earth (q.v.) would certainly have been corrupted» (la-fasadati l-arḍ). This root is very frequently paired with the phrase "in the land/earth, " e.g. in the account of Cain’s slaying of his brother Abel (see cain and abel) in q 5:32: «We decreed for the Children of Israel (q.v.) that if anyone killed a person — except for murder (q.v.; see also bloodshed) and corruption in the land (fasād fī l-arḍ) — it would be as if he had slain all the people.» Punishment for «corruption in the land» is extremely severe ("execution, or crucifixion [q.v.], or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land; that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the hereafter, " q 5:33; see chastisement and punishment; reward and punishment), unless the perpetrator sincerely repents in time (see repentance and penance). The sense that threads ¶ through such passages is that corruption and mischief are not only evil personal deeds but also expressions of fundamental hostility to and subversion of God’s created order, an order which embraces both nature and justice (q 26:151-2, 183; see justice and injustice). A particularly pointed passage about the perpetrator of corruption is q 2:204-5: «There is the type of individual whose speech about the life of this world delights you, and he calls God to witness what is in his heart (q.v.); yet he is the most contentious of opponents. When he turns away, his effort is to run about in the land sowing corruption in it (yufsida fīhā), destroying crops and young livestock — God does not love corruption (fasād).»

Another root, occurring far less frequently than f-s-d, is chiefly found in Medinan passages: kh-b-th, as in q 8:37, «that God may distinguish the corrupt (khabīth) from the good (ṭayyib, see good and evil), and put the corrupt one upon another, heap them together and cast them into hell (q.v.).» This root is dramatically displayed in q 24:26, where both masculine and feminine forms are used: «Corrupt women (al- khabīthāt) are for corrupt men (al-khabīthīn), and corrupt men for corrupt women.» «Impure» is an alternative translation because the passage addresses the slandering of chaste women (see adultery and fornication; chastity). Humankind’s proneness to corruption is an undesirable but inevitable consequence of their God-given freedom of action in the natural, moral and social realms (see freedom and predestination).

The matter of distorting scripture is addressed in Medinan passages accusing Jews (see jews and judaism; medina) of the practice, e.g. q 4:46: «Some of those who are Jews shift (yuḥarrifūna) words from their proper places and say, ‘We hear and disobey,’ and ‘Hear as one who hears not,’ ¶ and ‘ rāʿinā’ [an insulting corruption of an Arabic phrase, ‘rāʾinā,’ meaning „Please listen to us“], distorting with their tongues and slandering the religion.» The corruption of scripture is not a major or sustained topic in the Qurʾān although it became an important and abiding theological as well as textual controversy in later relations between Muslims and the People of the Book (q.v.; see also polemics and polemical language; theology and the qurʾān).

Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition

Fāsiḳ (1,295 words), unjust man, guilty of fisḳ ,—that is to say, one who has committed one or several «great sins» (kabāʾir). Most of the authors of ʿilm al-kalām ¶ avoid extending the term fāsiḳ to the believer who is guilty only of «lesser sins» (ṣag̲h̲āʾir).

The «name and status» (al-ism wa ’l-ḥukm) of the fāsiḳ is one of the cardinal points discussed by the kalām . Its origin goes back to the battle of Ṣiffīn and to the question which believers then raised, as to the destiny on earth and the future destiny of the Muslim leader, and hence of all Muslims who sinned.

Two initial trains of thought: a) the K̲h̲ārid̲j̲īs purely and simply condemned the unrepentant fāsiḳ to eternal hell and, on earth, denied his right to stand at the head of the Community. To commit an act of fisḳ rendered the imām unable to hold his office. (N.B.: for the S̲h̲īʿa, the lawful imām is inherently sinless), b) The Murd̲j̲iʾīs made the unjust man subject, on earth, to the fixed legal penalties (ḥudūd); but once this debt to the Community was paid, he remained in full exercise of his status as a believer, and, for the life to come, every believer is saved in hope.

These extreme solutions were to undergo certain modifications in the course of scholastic controversies, but were also to be a source of inspiration for them. It was on this theme that the Muʿtazila elaborated the thesis of the so-called «intermediary status», one of their particular characteristics which is attributed to Wāṣil ibn ʿAṭāʾ. The fāsiḳ is not entirely a believer (muʾmin) nor entirely an infidel (kāfir), but «in a position between the two», fī manzilat in bayna ’l-manzilatayn . On earth, he is answerable to the laws of the Muslim Community; but if he does not repent, he will be punished with eternal hell (e.g. Ḳurʾān , XXXII, 20)—though his punishment, it is true, will be less severe than that of the kāfir. This reply is entirely dependent on the conception of faith (īmān) which is involved. In the eyes of the Muʿtazila indeed, to be a believer signifies at once adhering in one’s heart, professing with the tongue, and witnessing «with the limbs» by performing the actions prescribed by the Law. Whoever does not fulfil the third condition cannot truly be a believer, and so cannot be saved.

In the Ibāna (Cairo 1348, ii) and the Maḳālāt (ed. Ritter, i, 293) Abu ’l-Ḥasan al-As̲h̲ʿarī defines the faith as «words and deeds», ḳawl and aʿmāl, thereby appearing to integrate the «witness of the limbs» with it, like the Muʿtazila. But his Kitāb al-Lumaʿ (ed. McCarthy, Beirut 1953, 75/104) states: «faith in God is taṣdīḳ (adherence) to God». And he taught clearly that it was impossible for a fāsiḳ to be neither a believer nor an unbeliever; if he was a believer before becoming a sinner, he said, the «great sin» committed will not invalidate his standing as a believer (Lumaʿ , 75-6/104-6). And al-As̲h̲ʿarī upholds this opinion with the tradition of the ahl al-istiḳāma («people of Rectitude», in R. J. McCarthy’s translation). The later As̲h̲ʿarites were to maintain the same principle even more forcibly since, for them, faith came to be identified solely with taṣdīḳ, adherence, inner judgement.—The same solution appears in the Ḥanafī-Māturīdī line of thought which defines faith as taṣdīḳ and its avowal in the spoken word (thus Fiḳh Akbar I , 1; Waṣiyyat Abī Ḥanīfa , 4; Fiḳh Akbar II , 14). The fāsiḳ is a sinner, but a believer.

In its apparent sense, verse XXXII, 18 of the Ḳurʾān certainly seemed to open the way to the Muʿtazila solution: «Is then the man who is a believer like him who is fāsiḳ? (No), they are in no way the same». But from the 4th/10th century, the dominant tendencies of ʿilm al-kalām taught that the fāsiḳ would be saved in the Hereafter. He can be punished by a certain time in the (eternal) hell: ¶ As̲h̲ʿarīs; or he will certainly be punished in that way: Māturīdīs (Fiḳh Akbar II , 14). But finally God will make him enter Paradise. «Those whose heart contains only an atom of faith», says the ḥadīt̲h̲ , «will leave hell» (al-Buk̲h̲ārī, Īmān , 33). According to the opinion which became generally accepted, good deeds enhance faith, but cease to form an integral part of its expression; to fail in a prescribed duty does not therefore render faith invalid.—Abū Ḥāmid al-G̲h̲azzālī, who accepted as equally legitimate both the definition which identifies faith with internal adherence alone, and also that which adds verbal profession and bodily actions (cf. Iḥyāʾ , Cairo 1352/ 1933, i, 104-5), defended the same thesis. He defines the fāsiḳ as the Muslim who adhered to the faith in his heart, professed it in his words, performed certain prescribed actions, but who committed «great sins».

The As̲h̲ʿarī solution is, in short, that of the ahl al-sunna taken as a whole, including the Ḥanbalīs, the opponents of kalām . It will be found for example in Ibn Taymiyya, and subsequently it became one of the articles of the Wahhābī profession of faith (cf. H. Laoust, Doctrines sociales et politiques de Taḳī-d-Dīn Aḥmad b. Taimīya , Cairo 1939, 621).

Two problems.—1) Can a prophet be said to be fāsiḳ? Literalists (called has̲h̲wiyya by their adversaries) have admitted this; but it is a question of purely material or unintentional sins, some will point out. The majority of Sunnīs will consider it blasphemous to attribute the name of fāsiḳ to a prophet. In his case they will admit, at most, only «minor sins», and that only insofar as neither the transmission of the message received from God (cf. al-Bād̲j̲ūrī, Ḥās̲h̲iya … ʿalā Ḏj̲awharat al-tawḥīd , Cairo 1352/1934, 71-3), nor even the personal observance of the Law by the prophet is concerned. Moreover, certain acts which appear to be sins have been performed by prophets merely «by way of teaching». The S̲h̲īʿa (e.g., Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, Ḥillī) were to teach the absolute sinlessness (ʿiṣma) of the prophet, and their doctrine was to influence their adversaries themselves. Thus the «modern» Fak̲h̲r al-Dīn Rāzī [q.v.], who nevertheless maintains the possibility of trifling errors arising from involuntary forgetfulness or from obscurities in the regulations; but still more the Ḥanbalī Ibn Taymiyya who adopts the S̲h̲īʿa thesis in its entirety, though making the ʿisma a gratuitous (and no longer «obligatory») favour of God (cf. Laoust, op. cit., 191).

2) Is it lawful to rise against an imām who is fāsiḳ? Yes, answered the K̲h̲ārid̲j̲īs and Muʿtazila, who even regarded insurrection as a duty in that event. The same attitude is found with the Zaydīs (moderate S̲h̲īʿa) and various S̲h̲īʿa trends, but the dogma of the imām’s sinlessness widely prevailed among the S̲h̲īʿa.—Certain jurists make a distinction: no revolt against the imām who is fāsiḳ, but refusal to obey the agents who are enforcing the injustice. Common Sunnī doctrine calls for obedience to the imām (and his agents), even if he be fāsiḳ in his private life, so long as he orders nothing contrary to Ḳurʾānic law. But if a command of his runs counter to a precise Ḳurʾānic or traditional precept, disobedience is permitted and even obligatory; if there is a guarantee of success, he must be deposed, if necessary by force.

In legal terminology, fāsiḳ is the opposite of ʿadl [q.v.].
